Fall Continuing Education 2025

Play Therapy Techniques in Supervision October 24, 2025

🎨 Supervision That Sparks Insight, Creativity, and Confidence

If you are a supervisor working with play therapists, you know that traditional talk-based supervision doesn't always capture the depth and nuance of their clinical work. Sometimes, supervision feels flat or repetitive. Other times, supervisees struggle to connect the dots between the child’s play and the therapeutic process or feel overwhelmed navigating parent dynamics.

This workshop is your space to reimagine supervision as creative, embodied, and deeply effective.

Incorporating expressive arts and play-based techniques in supervision doesn’t just make the process more engaging, it supports supervisees in client conceptualization, emotional integration, and confidence when working with complex family systems.

🌟 Why This Workshop Is Needed

Play therapy supervision is unique. Your supervisees are translating sand trays, role-plays, and symbols into clinical meaning. They are often holding big emotions, navigating unclear family boundaries, and trying to find their voice when talking with parents.

You can help them do that better, not just with case notes, but with crayons, metaphor, and movement.

This workshop invites you to:

  • Use creative supervision to enhance clinical thinking and case conceptualization
  • Support supervisees in processing emotional transfer and stuck points
  • Empower supervisees to engage parents with clarity and professionalism, while holding appropriate boundaries
  • Restore a sense of vitality and joy to your own supervision process

🧰 What You’ll Experience

  • Interactive supervision exercises using art, sand tray metaphor, or embodied movement
  • Case-based discussion focused on how to link play themes to treatment goals
  • Frameworks to help supervisees feel more prepared and empowered when involving parents
  • Tools you can use right away to shift stuck or overly analytical supervision into something dynamic and relational

📚 Grounded in Research

  • Expressive arts in supervision promote deeper insight, creative problem-solving, and connection to clinical theory.
  • Supervisees benefit from modeling approaches that mirror their work with children, enhancing integration and transfer to practice.
  • Structured support in managing parent engagement builds confidence, reduces role confusion, and protects the therapeutic alliance.

Learning Objectives

Play therapy supervision requires its own unique blend of creativity, reflection, and structure. This workshop invites play therapy supervisors to deepen their consultation work using expressive arts, metaphor, and embodied reflection. We’ll explore how to empower play therapists in their work with parents, navigate the emotional transfer that can arise in child-focused therapy, and use creative methods to process stuck points and strengthen clinical insight.

  1. Identify three unique supervision needs of clinicians who practice play therapy.
  2. Demonstrate at least three expressive arts or play-based techniques that can be used in supervision to support reflection and integration.
  3. Describe how to support supervisees in coordinating care and engaging parents while maintaining clinical boundaries.
