FALL CONTINUING EDUCATION 2025

The Stories We Tell Ourselves December 19, 2025

“I just can’t stop thinking about it.”

How many times have you heard a client say this?

They replay the same memory, rehash the same pain, or circle endlessly around their shame. Their story feels cemented and no matter how much insight they gain, they can’t seem to shift it.

As therapists, we know trauma, anxiety, and deeply entrenched beliefs are not just “stories” clients tell, they are lived emotional truths encoded in the nervous system. Helping clients move beyond these stuck narratives isn’t about logic or reassurance. It’s about rewiring the story at its roots.

A Workshop Designed for Therapists Who Want to Go Deeper

In The Stories We Tell Ourselves, you’ll learn how to guide clients toward lasting narrative shifts by integrating:

✅ Narrative Therapy techniques that help clients re-author their inner scripts.

✅ Memory reconsolidation strategies, rooted in neuroscience, to unlock the brain’s natural capacity for transformation.

✅ IFS (Internal Family Systems) and EMDR-informed methods to help clients safely revisit and reprocess the emotional charge behind their stories.

Through live triad practice, you won’t just learn these skills—you’ll feel them. You’ll experience firsthand how it feels to rewrite a personal narrative and witness the power of memory reconsolidation in real time.

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Identify how self-talk and inner narratives are formed through early memory encoding.
  • Explain how memory reconsolidation opens the door for lasting therapeutic change.
  • Demonstrate at least three practical interventions to help clients re-script maladaptive narratives.

Why This Matters

When clients shift their story, they shift their identity.

You’ll leave this workshop not only with powerful interventions, but also with a felt sense of what it means to truly transform a stuck narrative so you can bring that experience back to your clients.

This is more than a training. It’s a chance to:

✨ Break free from purely cognitive approaches.

✨ Witness the healing potential of experiential techniques.

✨ Deepen your confidence in working with shame, trauma, and entrenched self-criticism.

Learning Objectives

Our inner narratives shape how we move through the world. In this introspective workshop, we’ll explore how clients’ self-talk, inner critics, and core beliefs are formed and how to help them change. Grounded in neuroscience and memory reconsolidation theory, we’ll practice techniques that invite clients to re-script the stories that no longer serve them. Ideal for clinicians working with shame, anxiety, or trauma.

  1. Identify how self-talk and inner narrative patterns are formed through early life experiences and memory encoding.
  2. Describe the process of memory reconsolidation and its role in therapeutic change.
  3. Demonstrate at least two interventions to help clients rewrite maladaptive internal narratives.
